What kind of plastic containers are microwave safe? How to identify?

Microwave ovens have become an integral part of our kitchens, offering a quick and convenient way to heat food. However, not all containers are safe to use in a microwave, especially when it comes to plastic. The safety of plastic containers in microwaves primarily depends on the type of plastic used.

The main concern with using plastic containers in microwaves is the potential for chemicals in the plastic to leach into food when heated. These chemicals, such as Bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates, have been linked to numerous health issues.

Identifying Microwave-Safe Plastics

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends using glass, ceramic, and plastic containers labeled for microwave oven use. The key factor in determining which containers are suitable for microwave cooking is by checking for the microwave-safe label on the containers. However, it’s important to note that there are currently no standards available for claims such as ‘microwave-safe’.

Safe Plastics for Microwave Use

Plastic labeled with the number 5 is considered the safest to microwave. It is resistant to high heat and won’t warp. This plastic is also free of BPA, a chemical that can be harmful to our health. Polypropylene (PP), another type of plastic, is also considered safe for microwave use as it is heat-resistant and retains its shape when heated.

Plastics to Avoid

Avoid plastic containers labeled 3, 6, or 7 as these are never considered microwave safe.

While microwaving food in plastic containers is convenient, it’s crucial to ensure the safety of the containers used. Always look for the microwave-safe label and avoid using containers that do not have this symbol. When in doubt, opt for glass or ceramic containers, as they are generally safe for microwave use.
